Case Study – Vos Construction & Joinery, TopSolid’Wood,
backed by Opticad Solutions.

We spoke to Jeff Scott from Vos Construction & Joinery in Tasmania to talk about how they use TopSolid’Wood.

About Vos Construction

Vos Construction & Joinery is a family-owned Tasmanian company with a proud history of delivering construction and joinery solutions. The company is known for offering a “one-stop shop” for construction, joinery, shopfitting and glazing, prioritising strong local partnerships. The company employs over 250 staff in Tasmania.

How long have you been using TopSolid’Wood for?

“I have been using TopSolid’Wood here at Vos Construction & Joinery since 2015 so we are talking 10 years now.”

What are your thoughts on TopSolid’Wood CAD software?

“It is awesome! There have been projects that would have been very difficult to complete without TopSolid’Wood. We always have demanding workloads and a broad range of commercial projects; this software makes my job so much easier to manage. The use of 3D modelling provides a great visual on the job that I am working on. It also gives clarity to our clients, architects and tradesmen in the factory and on site. Parametric construction provides a means to easily adjust projects to site conditions without the need for redraw.

What is your process with documents and using them with TopSolid’Wood?

“We typically receive pre-designed 2D architectural drawings. We reproduce those 2D drawings into fully parametric 3d designs in TS’Wood. That way, we can see exactly what the design will look like when completed and review construction and installation design, also allowing us to pre-empt any issues such as clashes of components, appliances, site conditions, etc. It gives me confidence that we’re heading in the right direction before anything is cut. We have notable feedback from clients, architects and builders on the quality and accuracy of our shop drawings.”

How is this important to you?

“We work with large high-value projects. These typically run into millions of dollars. One mistake could cost us dearly, not only financially but also in terms of reputation and future work. We have to get it right, and TS’Wood helps ensure that we do. TopSolid have a saying “Design to build”. Everything we draw in the software can be exported and manufactured; nothing is required to be drawn again in any other software. The ability to draw anything from typical joinery to the most obscure and bespoke joinery and steelwork.”

What happens next?

“That’s where TS’Wood really helps. I can send the file directly to our CAM software. From there, we calculate materials, plan the machining, and then send the programs to the machine to cut the parts. Getting this stage right is critical. If something goes wrong, it’s not just our business that suffers, the entire project is impacted. It is so important that the connection between Cad & Cam is precise and we know we have the right processes in place.”

What kind of jobs are we talking about?

“Amongst many projects, a standout being the iconic Sydney Opera House. Vos Construction and Joinery was contracted to work on The Western Renewal Project which focused on the venues largest internal space, The Grand Concert Hall. The hall seats 2000 people and is known for its high vaulted ceiling and the world’s largest mechanical tracker-action pipe organ weighing 37.5 tonne.

We prototyped, designed, fabricated and installed the timber, acoustic and architectural brush box (a local native species of eucalypt) diffusion panels and substructure which accommodates the operable components of the theatre equipment. This is a key part to the acoustic and architectural upgrade to the Concert Hall, and comprises the single largest visual aspect to the 50-year renewal.

These type of projects would have been very difficult without the clarity that TS’Wood provides.”

How did you find Opticad Solutions?

“They were fantastic. I’ve known Chris for a long time, he implemented our original setup and has been by our side ever since. Chris being a joiner himself has deep knowledge of both the industry and the software. More importantly, he understands what it means for people like me in my role. They’re incredibly supportive. If anything goes wrong, Opticad is there straight away. With some software providers, you’re left in the dark when issues arise. But with Opticad, you’re never on your own. To me, the software is only as good as the company behind it, and Opticad has proven to be a true business partner all the way.”
